Dublin Bus operates the Public Service Obligation network in Greater Dublin, carrying 118 million customers a year. It provides an extensive range of bus services - Cross City, Radial, Orbital, DART Feeder, Airlink, express limited stop commuter services, Nitelink, and Sightseeing tours. i3 Digital has worked with Dublin Bus since 2008 to deliver dynamic, accessible and customer-focused solutions, allowing operational efficiencies and strategic change within the organisation.
The project goal was to provide a website and app hub for Dublin’s locals and visitors providing a readily accessible information portal informing how to travel throughout Dublin effectively by Bus. i3 Digital has worked with Dublin Bus since 2008 on its online platforms and applications. Our challenge was to deliver a more dynamic, accessible and customer-focused solution, allowing operational efficiencies and strategic change within the organization.
Through User Experience Analysis and Information Architecture planning, i3 Digital delivered a solution enabling Dublin Bus to effectively communicate routes, timetables and costs to local users and tourists. The solution manages over 5 million visits to the websites and applications per month, and our app is officially one of Ireland’s Top 10 of All Time in terms of usage and download figures!
We constantly maintain and improve the website and app services, and recently developed an interactive journey planner allowing users to plan their unique journeys. This integrates all Luas, walking, DART and bus routes, providing a comprehensive suite of user options. An Interactive Fare Calculator also allows users to calculate their precise fare costs ahead of any journey. This is based on band pricing and real-time passenger information systems which constantly tracks congestion and provides instantaneous information on any delays or service irregularities to users.
To complement the website, i3 Digital designed and built native iOS and Android applications. These provide identical features with the additional functionality for users to choose their favourite stops and establish location-aware interfaces.
Alongside the public facing web and app solutions, i3 Digital delivered major enhancements to internal usability and customer service. We integrated the internal systems with the websites, forming one common information repository that integrates with Adobe InDesign. This delivered an automated solution capable of feeding the off-line printing of timetables for signage across Dublin.
This i3 Digital app has achieved huge status and success. It won “IT project of the Year” in the Public Sector ICT Excellence Awards, and Best Productivity app and Best Tourism app at the 2013 Appys. In September 2014, the Dublin Bus app was officially recognised as one of the All Time Top 10 Apps in Ireland. The Digi-Times deemed that it is “a must have on every phone in Dublin”, and to date has been used to plan over 20,000,000 journeys around the Irish capital.
