Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland

The Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland provides independent, impartial investigation on complaints made about the Police in Northern Ireland. Outcomes of investigations are made entirely independently of the Police, Government and those who have made the complaint.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland’s website is a vital communications channel for the office. Through the website, PONI makes information available to a range of various stakeholders including the general public in Northern Ireland, police officers, government ministers, and policy makers. It is also the main source of information for its stakeholders, and is used for education purposes. This information can include reports, case summaries, press releases, statistics and other relevant data. In terms of raising stakeholder awareness, the website provides timely, accurate, and easily accessible information, and is utilised by all stakeholders to share information, seek advice and lodge complaints.

Activity

The old website was incrementally developed over nine years, and both PONI and i3 Digital believed that, given the modern requirements and functions required, the dated ColdFusion Content Management System was no longer fit for purpose. Moreover, in terms of user experience and the overall user interface issues, the site was in major need of a re-design.

What We Delivered

After being selected via a highly competitive tender process, the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland entrusted i3 Digital with the full redesign and build of its new website. The overall project focused on three main aspects:

•    Firstly, it was vital that the new website was redesigned in such a manner that complete migration from the current site to new CMS was a smooth process.
•    Secondly, i3 Digital was tasked with developing an extremely user-friendly, dedicated website that fully met the needs of all PONI stakeholders. Due to the nature of work carried out by the Office, the site required adoption of a plethora of administrative facilities.
•    Finally, the facilities included the functionality to permit PONI staff to co-ordinate the Office’s press and social media activity. It was also important that the new site allowed for online recruitment and job application processes.

After working closely with PONI and gaining a full understanding of its needs, i3 Digital has successfully implemented complete migration of content from the old ColdFusion back-end to the world-class Kentico CMS, version 8 edition.

The website’s design has, as a direct result, adopted a cleaner, less cluttered look and feel than its predecessor. It also includes functionality that is absolutely crucial to PONI’s current and future requirements. These include functionality surrounding current and historical investigations, media releases, reports, and a media library suite (video and audio). i3 Digital has also delivered a new website that provides users with links to statistics, as well as complete social media integration and an online job application module.
